Religion causes war or peace?

Is religion a source of conflict and war? Or is it a force for peace?

Religion has been directly responsible for some wars. However in virtually all wars the powers that be use religion (which, as you allude to, encourages dogmatism and simplistic black and white uncritical thinking) to sell their war to the general public.

 

There would still be wars without religion. Other methods of indoctrination, ostracism, and dehumanization would be used (and are used). But religion makes it so much easier due to its power and influence.

Religion is not in the clear when it comes to wars. The church have supported war campaigns over the centuries that her hands can never be clean from the blood its spilled over the decades. 

 

Even now, religion still cause a lot of war especially with the Islamic state and their extremists.
