Description

Overview

Fortnite is a third-person sandbox game platform developed and published by Epic Games for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, PC, Mac, and both iOS and Android devices on June 29, 2020, with several early access releases (the earliest being July 25, 2017 for computer and XONE/PS4 versions). It was later released on the Xbox Series X|S on November 10, 2020 and on the PlayStation 5 on November 12, 2020, both as launch titles.

Running on the studio's signature game engine (first Unreal Engine 4, then Unreal Engine 5), Fortnite originally focused on two distinct multiplayer-focused game modes that utilized numerous exploration, scavenging, crafting, and constructing elements from other sandbox-survival games (such as Minecraft and Rust). These modes were the pay-to-play co-operative campaign "Save the World" and the free-to-play player-vs-player mode "Battle Royale".

After release, Epic shifted from focusing on its popular Battle Royale mode into developing Fortnite as a sandbox game platform similar to Roblox, with several player-created modes as "islands" (created first with the sandbox "Creative" mode, then with the "Unreal Editor for Fortnite" level editor). Epic themselves created several game modes on this platform, including the sandbox-survival game "Lego Fortnite", the Rocket League spin-off racing game "Rocket Racing", and the music rhythm game "Fortnite Festival".

The game is known for its several cross-promotional content with celebrities and other licensed media franchises for the Battle Royale mode, including characters and special events. This is most prominent with both Marvel and DC superhero universes, and also includes several video game, television, film, anime, and cartoon series. It is also known for being the forefront of lawsuits against both Apple and Google for legal issues regarding in-app purchasing.

Game Modes (Official)

Save the World

The game's original mode, later re-titled "Save the World", is a co-operative campaign where up to four players can band together as unique Heroes and co-operate on missions in procedurally-generated landscapes, earning new weapon schematics, trap schematics, and upgraded Heroes by completing missions and opening loot chests.

The mode is set in a near-future contemporary Earth, where a mysterious and chaotic storm has engulfed the planet, dropping zombie-like creatures that put the world in an apocalyptic state. The remaining survivors have found a way to shield locations from the storm (using special field generators known as "Storm Shields") and must find survivors, resources, and a way to repel the storm completely.

The mode was originally developed in conjunction with People Can Fly, and the early-access XONE and PS4 versions were also released in retail format on July 25, 2017 by Gearbox. This mode is not available on the Switch, iOS, and Android versions, with the Mac version discontinued on September 23, 2020.

Battle Royale

Originally added on September 26, 2017, "Battle Royale" is a survival-shooter mode (similar to PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS and H1Z1) in which players participate in 100-player matches where all players drop down into a large uninhabited island (in which a deadly "Storm" is approaching the island), scavenge for weapons and items, and fight to the death to become the last team standing.

Unlike most other survival-shooters, Fortnite's standard gameplay makes heavy use of the structure-building mechanic of the "Save the World" mode, allowing players to mine resources and quickly build structures (of varying quality) to give them a structural and/or height advantage. It later received an alternate "Zero Build" mode on March 29, 2022, removing the building aspect while adding a recharging overshield.

While the game is normally played in either standard free-for-all (Solos) or team matches (two-player Duos, three-player Trios, or four-player Squads), in both casual and competitive settings, the game also received numerous limited-time event modes (LTMs) that change the rules in numerous ways (such as larger-team 50v50 modes, modes that change the weapon and item spawns, and traditional deathmatch modes with respawning enabled). Some of these modes tie-in to an in-game event (such as the cross-promotional Infinity Gauntlet mode) while some are special "Live Events" that have players instead watching an event unfold (such as a live concert).

As a live service game, it is one of the earliest games to include map and game mechanic alternations on a seasonal basis. This includes weapon and item vaulting, where they become unavailable outside of special events.

LEGO Fortnite

Released on December 7, 2023, LEGO Fortnite is a sandbox-survival game similar to Minecraft, with players playing as LEGO minifig versions of their chosen character.

Rocket Racing

Released on December 8, 2023 and co-developed by Psyonix, Rocket Racing is an arcade-style racing game.

Fortnite Festival

Released on December 9, 2023 and co-developed by Harmonix, Fortnite Festival is a music rhythm game based on Harmonix's Rock Band series, with up to four players playing an instrument in the band (lead, drum, vocals, or bass).

Weapons

In the Save the World and Battle Royale modes, each weapon is found (BR) or crafted (STW) in one of numerous color-coded "rarities" similar to MMORPGs (grey Common, green Uncommon, blue Rare, purple Epic, and gold Legendary), with higher-rarity weapons dealing increased damage and having improved stats. In most cases, Epic and Legendary versions in the Battle Royale mode also have a unique weapon model. A "Mythic" version has also been used as special Boss drops in Battle Royale.

Both modes have different assortments of weaponry, none of which carry over. Each weapon uses one of several ammunition types (the most common being Light Bullets, Medium Bullets, Heavy Bullets, and Shells). In Save the World, weapons have a limited durability.

Since the game's beta, most of the arsenal in the Battle Royale mode has been put "in the vault" and shelved, meaning that they cannot be obtained in normal play. At times, they are brought out into normal rotation and can be found in certain Limited Time Modes, but most of them can also be found in Creative modes.

Light Bullets

Light Bullets are commonly used for faster-firing, close-ranged weapons with less damage-per-shot, namely submachine guns. It is also used for pistols, which are slower-firing, but deal more headshot damage. In Save the World, these are also used for faster-firing assault rifles.

Some assault weaponry in the Battle Royale vault have also used this ammunition type, namely the Minigun (which require a windup, has no reloading, and can overheat after long continuous fire).

Currently active in Battle Royale:

  • Hyper SMG - Sub-machine gun with a very high rate-of-fire.
  • Thunder Burst SMG - Sub-machine gun that fires in three-round bursts.
  • Ranger Pistol - Pistol with a moderate rate-of-fire. A special Epic version, the Ballistic Shield, combines it with a ballistic shield that can withstand gunfire from the front and be used to shield bash.

Medium Bullets

Medium Bullets are commonly used for mid-ranged weapons with average damage-per-shot, namely assault rifles. It is also used for revolvers, which are slower-firing and closer-ranged, but deal more headshot damage. In Battle Royale, these are also used for marksman rifles, which are slower-firing, but are scoped for longer ranges.

Some assault weaponry in the Battle Royale vault are high-magazine, slow-reloading weapons, including the Drum Gun and Light Machine Gun. Additionally, it has been used for dual-wielded pistols.

Currently active in Battle Royale:

  • Striker AR - Assault rifle with a high rate-of-fire.
  • Nemesis AR - Assault rifle with a moderate rate-of-fire.

Heavy Bullets

Medium Bullets are commonly used for slower-firing, long-ranged weapons with high damage-per-shot, namely sniper rifles. It is also used for some heavy-hitting pistols and revolvers.

Some pistols in the Battle Royale vault have also used this ammunition type, namely the knockback Flint-Knock Pistol and the extremely-powered Hand Cannon. In addition, some vaulted sniper rifles include charged-shot railguns.

Currently active in Battle Royale:

  • Reaper Sniper Rifle - Bolt-action sniper rifle.

Shells

Shells, also known as Shells 'n' Slugs, are commonly used for slower-firing, close-ranged weapons with high damage-per-shot, namely shotguns.

In Battle Royale, it was also used for the compound bow known as the Boom Bow (which used arrows with explosive shotgun-shell tips).

Currently active in Battle Royale:

  • Hammer Pump Shotgun - Pump-action shotgun, dealing more damage at a slower rate-of-fire.
  • Frenzy Auto Shotgun - Semi-automatic shotgun, dealing less damage at a higher rate-of-fire.

Melee Weapons

Primarily used in the Save the World mode are melee weapons, which have stronger damage and special properties compared to the player's standard pickaxe. These include several edged weapons (axes and swords), several blunt weapons (clubs and hammers), and several weapons intended for longer-ranged swings (spears and scythes).

Other

Throughout the years, the Battle Royale has received several high-powered weapons that made use of special ammunition, including Rockets (which were used for multiple types of Rocket Launchers and Grenade Launchers) and Arrows (which were used for charged-shot bows). In addition, there have been special weapons that used their own unique ammunition, such as the Recycler (which uses "Junk Ammo" absorbed from structures) and both the Kymera Ray Gun and Crossbow, which have infinite ammo.

Save the World still makes use of weapons using Rockets. Additionally, some weapons in that mode use Energy Ammo.

Limited Time Modes (BR)

Along with the standard Squads (where players can form four-man "squads"), Duos (where players can form two-man "duos"), and Solo (completely free-for-all) playlists, Epic has regularly released limited-time event playlists (called LTMs, or Limited Time Modes) that alter the standard formula.

  • 50v50 - First made available on December 7, 2017, 50v50 is a Squads playlist that splits the game lobby into two equal teams (of up to 50 players each). It was later improved upon by having each team drop from their own Battle Bus at opposite sides of the island, having the storm circle located in-between, and heavily increasing the ammunition and resources.
  • High Explosives - First made available on December 28, 2017, High Explosives is a Squads playlist where the only weapons that can be found are those that use the Rockets ammo type. Traps are disabled and grenade items are easier to find. Was later changed to Fly Explosives with the addition of enhanced Jetpacks.
  • Sneaky Silencers - First made available on January 5, 2018, Sneaky Silencers is a Squads playlist where the only weapons that can be found are those with suppressors. Traps are disabled and the Bush item is easier to find.
  • Sniper Shootout - First made available on January 29, 2018, Sniper Shootout is a Squads (later Solo and Duos) playlist where the only weapons that can be found are all Sniper Rifle variants (including Hunting Rifles).
  • Shooting Test - First made available on February 5, 2018, Shooting Test is a playlist used for publicly testing alterations to weapon accuracy and recoil.
  • Solid Gold - First made available on February 27, 2018, Solid Gold is a Squads (and later Solo) playlist where the only weapons that can be found are those with the Legendary rarity. Rocket weapons can only be found in Chests.
  • Teams of 20 - First made available on March 8, 2018, Teams of 20 is a Squads playlist that splits the game lobby into five equal teams (of up to 20 players each). It was later improved upon by having each team drop from their own Battle Bus at different points of the island (their paths forming a hexagon). Later used Final Fight rules (where the final circle instead triggers a end-of-game countdown timer).
  • Blitz - First made available on March 19, 2018, Blitz is a faster-paced Squads playlist with much shorter Storm times (with the circle closing in from the start), improved overall loot spawn, and increased resources from loot/harvesting. It was later improved upon by having the Battle Bus enter from a lower height.
  • Infinity Gauntlet - First made available on May 8, 2018, Infinity Gauntlet is a cross-promotion with the 2018 film Avengers: Infinity War. A faster-paced Solo variation of the Blitz playlist, players fight over possession of a singular Infinity Gauntlet. Once a player has the Gauntlet in their possession, they transform into the powerful supervillain Thanos and have access to both a variety of unique attacks (including a super-jump, an electrical blast, and a mighty punch) and a high amount of vitality (with shields that regenerate after each kill), at the cost of being unable to build nor carry items. To counter Thanos (and to hasten the game's pace), players have an easier time finding higher-grade loot.
  • Close Encounters - First made available on May 25, 2018, Close Encounters is a Squads playlist where the only weapons that can be found are Pump Shotguns and Tactical Shotguns. In addition, Jetpacks and Heavy Shotguns can be found in Chests. Grapplers were later added.
  • 8 Teams of 12 - First made available on June 27, 2018, 8 Teams of 12 is a Squads playlist that splits the game lobby into eight equal teams (of up to 20 players each). Later used Final Fight rules (where the final circle instead triggers a end-of-game countdown timer).
  • Playground - First made available on June 27, 2018, Playground puts a single squad into the map to train, explore, and create. Friendly fire is on (with players respawning after being eliminated) and resources are heavily increased.
  • Steady Storm - First made available on August 7, 2018, Steady Storm is a Squads playlist that has the storm closing in to one central point from the start. Although the storm moves slowly, it is more damaging and does not display the final point on the map.
  • Soaring 50's - First made available on August 15, 2018, Soaring 50's is a Squads playlist that builds on the 50v50 playlist. Increased Impulse Grenade, Launch Pad, and Bounce Pad spawns, and players can deploy their glider manually by jumping while mid-air and at least 10 meters off the ground.
  • Score Royale - First made available on August 23, 2018, Score Royale is a Solo playlist where players score points by opening loot, killing enemies, and collecting coins scattered throughout the map. First player to reach the point limit (or the last player standing) wins.
  • Solid Gold 50v50 - First made available on August 28, 2018, Solid Gold 50v50 is a Squads playlist that builds on the 50v50 mode by having only Legendary weapons spawn.
  • The Getaway - First made available on September 6, 2018, The Getaway is a Squads playlist where squads race to retrieve one of four unique Jewel items on the map (which are found in special supply drops) and bring them to one of four Getaway Vans near the center of the storm. Safes and Getaway Vans show up in the mini-map, while players who pick up the Jewel will be visibile on the mini-map for 30 seconds. Players holding the jewel get health and shield regeneration, but have slower movement speed. Weapons are only found in the Rare, Epic, and Legendary rarities. Rifts and Launchpads disabled.
  • Soaring Solos - First made available on September 18, 2018, Soaring Solos is a Solo playlist where players can deploy their glider manually by jumping while mid-air and at least 10 meters off the ground.
  • Disco Domination - First made available on October 10, 2018, Disco Domination is a Squads playlist that combines 50v50 mode with the Domination mode from Unreal Tournament. Teams attempt to capture "Dance Floors" scattered around an area of the island by emoting in them uncontested, each of which slowly add to the team "Dance Bar". First team to have a full Dance Bar wins the match. Respawning is enabled until the storm has completely moved in (which also triples the amount of points added to the Dance Bar). Glider Redeploy is also enabled.
  • Fortnitemares - First made available on October 24, 2018.
  • Team Terror - First made available on November 6, 2018.

  • Zero Build - First made available on March 29, 2022. Unlike the regular Battle Royale mode, the Build function is permanently disabled, forcing players to make due with regards to getting around the environment. It proved so popular with the player base that it was eventually made into its own permanent game mode for those who preferred to play without the Build function.

Map

The map of Fortnite differs in the version of Fortnite being played.

In Fortinte: Save the World, 4 locations are featured. These unlock by completing quests for previous outlocks. The locations are:

In Fortnite: Battle Royale, as of Chapter 2 Season 2, there exist 18 locations in the map, all named in an alliterative fashion, except for The Agency, The Yatch, The Shark, The Rig, and The Grotto. Examples of locations include Lazy Lake, The Agency and Pleasant Park. These tend to vary notably during certain game events, with effects which range from temporary visual changes to their destruction.

Fortnite took the world by storm when it came out and whilst the numbers have dropped down a bit, it is still doing somewhat well. Do you guys still play Fortnite?

Fortnite has always been the number one epics store game. It's always high depending and so many players put hours into this game. I always said it was a fun kids game and the truth that you see so many kids and young people playing this game. With Ninja, I think that this won't be what the game is today without him doing countless content. 

 

Personally I haven't played it, Seen videos and live streamers but I just never like how it runs and never got into the game.

It was pretty fun when it came out and it was fun for a couple of seasons as well. But the game got a bit complicated and child-like after a while. I haven't played it for ages now after I got COD and I don't think I will go back.
