Grand Theft Auto V

About

Rockstar returns to the fictional state of San Andreas with a crew of three criminal protagonists who work together to pull off a series of high-profile heists.

Description

Overview

Grand Theft Auto V (GTA V) takes the franchise back to the city of Los Santos previously seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. Unlike prior games in the series which focus on telling the story of a single player controlled character, GTA V features three central characters that the player is able to actively switch between at nearly any time during gameplay.

Rockstar Games states that this will be their largest open world game to date, boasting a total area greater than those of GTA: San Andreas, GTA IV, and Red Dead Redemption combined. At a preview event in Spring 2013, reps said that the map in GTA V will be "five times bigger than Red Dead Redemption".

A first for the franchise, players aren't restricted from certain areas in the game and can now explore the entire environment at their leisure.

At E3 2014, it was announced that Grand Theft Auto V would be coming to the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, and the PC. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions were released on November 18, 2014 with the PC version releasing on April 14 2015 after numerous delays.

Gameplay

The gameplay is similar to that of previous installments in the franchise. Players control one of three characters in a free-roaming open-world environment. GTA V places a higher emphasis on heist missions, in which players can switch between the various protagonists on the fly, potentially allowing them to take control of a car or provide covering fire as they see fit. Players can also switch between the protagonists between missions at any time.

Many of the game elements found in GTA IV will return, such as: fake TV shows, minigames, clothing customization, and leisure activities, which now include tennis, yoga and base jumping. Dynamic missions have been introduced - similar to the random encounters of Red Dead Redemption, players may come across certain situations as they travel the world that they can choose whether or not to investigate.

The customary bevy of vehicles and weapons are available. A first in the series, weapons now boast the ability to be outfitted with custom parts; silencers, flashlights and more can be liberally applied to weapons of all types.

Story

No Caption Provided

GTA V splits its story between three playable characters, each representing a different side of Los Santos. Each character will have their own missions and side stories, as well as their own daily routines when not controlled by the player. The story progresses as the player completes missions with all three, which can allow the player to have insight into the events even when their current character does not. The player can switch between the characters at any time outside of missions and specific story moments.

Characters

The three playable protagonists of the game are a retired bank robber named Michael, a violent career criminal named Trevor, and a young repo man named Franklin. Each character represents a different personality and angle of the world of crime in Los Santos.

Michael De Santa

No Caption Provided

Michael is a successful former bank robber in his early 40s, who decided to retire by making a deal with the authorities, and settled down with his family. Now, his marriage is in ruins and he is incapable of connecting with either of his two teenage children. Michael seeks to ditch his lush life in Rockford Hills and get back in the game.

Trevor Phillips

[external image]

Trevor is a violent drug addict, in his early 40s. He has worked with Michael in the past, and is firmly entrenched in a life of crime. He has experience as a former military pilot and is currently living in Blaine County. He is the 'loose cannon' of the group.

Franklin Clinton

[external image]

Franklin works as a repo man for a luxury car dealership in South Los Santos. He is an ambitious hustler in his mid 20s who seeks fortune and only knows how to attain it on the streets. Franklin is fit and much more capable than Michael and Trevor.

Game Engine

Preliminary reports describe Grand Theft Auto V's graphics engine as a modified version of the Rage engine used in Grand Theft Auto IV. The engine was extensively modified for Red Dead Redemption after GTA IV and further refinements were reported to be made for GTA V and Max Payne 3.

Multiplayer

The online multiplayer component, referred to as GTA Online, launched as a free download two weeks after the initial release of GTA V. The service officially launched on October 1st, 2013.

In GTA Online, up to 16 players (30 players on Xbox One and Playstation 4) engage in co-op missions, competitive deathmatches, races or free roam activities. An included in-game editor also allows players to design their own missions to share with other players. Nearly all of the components from the single player game are accessible in GTA Online including side activities such as golf and tennis. Additionally, the multiplayer features player progression and persistence with each player earning reputation points and money to spend on clothing, properties, vehicles, weapons, and more. Some elements of the world are also persistent among all players in GTA Online including for example the stock prices of various companies players can invest money into.

GTA Online is set prior to the events of GTA V's single player and features interactions with some of its characters.

Rockstar has stated that GTA Online will have extended support with additional content, including the possible addition of new areas at some point in the future.

GTA Online launched on October 1st, 2013, but had some major server issues after it launched, mainly because of "millions" of people logging in to the service at the same time. Rockstar confirmed that they were having server issues the same day, and have been working to fix the server issues since. They have posted multiple blog posts about the progress, and almost all the server issues have been resolved.

Soundtrack

GTA V features 240 licensed tracks across 15 radio stations, and is the first game in the franchise to also feature an original score. The original score is produced by three separate composers, Edgar Froese of the electronic band Tangerine Dream, Woody Jackson who previously worked on the Red Dead Redemption and LA Noire soundtracks, and the hip-hop duo Alchemist and Oh No. Each composer's distinct sound is used to define the different characters and environments of the game.

The Xbox One, PS4 and PC version receives over 150 new tracks to the soundtrack, including several exclusive original songs from the following artists: Flying Lotus, Jamie Lidell, Freddie Gibbs and more.

I made a review years back :)

Quote

Grand Theft Auto V launched in 2013 was met with praise from almost everyone, most praised the graphics engine upgrades, the gameplay features, cars, music etc. GTA 5 or GTA Online is a very good game. I can't think of it as of something ordinary and casual, every time you play it , you know how Rockstar Games is Right. Tremendous amounts of work on graphics, animating story, giant world, that is impressive. Their game engine, RAGE or whatever, is simply the best game engine to this moment, it is obvious, especially its scripting capabilities, platform support, networking part.

This time however we have 3 protagonists to play as.
1. Franklin: A street thug that is tired of hustling and just wants to make millions and to get back with his ex girlfriend and move into his own home that he can call his own but can't seem to break free of his gang activity with his best friend Lamar who is constantly harassing him on the account that he feels Franklin is abandoning his home turf crew.

2. Michael: A straight out of the movies wannabe failure father who made his mark 10 years prior while faking his death during a routine bank robbery. A failure in the eyes of his wife and kids, Michael sets out on a journey to make millions on the account his anger got the best of him while finding out his wife was sleeping around and decided to pull a multi-million dollar home off a mountain top. A man who is tired of sitting on his bleep rotting away meets Franklin and together rob and steal their way to stardom. Franklin, In my opinion, Franklin was the most worthless character in v, all he did was complain and complain some more, always complaining about money even though he is living in a free house with a pool and sitting on top of money. All franklin cared about was money didn't care for Michael or Trevor only himself.

3. Trevor: The new mascot of the series, Trevor is you're every day Psychopath who is a drug dealer turned bank robber, He finds out his best friend Michael faked his death 10 years prior while robbing a bank and seeks out the truth and in turn becomes wrapped up with making a fortune all while living in a trailer with cockroaches while he is also sitting on 200 grand lol.

GTA V is a title you do not want to miss, GTA v is best played on the PC platform as you get 60fps, Graphical upgrades, better resolution draw distances so on and so forth. Although they've ruined something in this specific game that the plot, story, characters, they become absolutely insensible, cartoonish, they actually ruined the story mode with this to the zero. I don't like it. My first portion of critics of this game is that they drifted from IV's sarcastic accents in characters, story, and world-building, to the more cartoon and "nonsense" style. However Dynamic and unique gameplay seems to have been very important in the design of this game, and it certainly shows. Every single time I launch GTA, the experience is new and varied. This is especially helped by the inclusion of three main story characters, which can be switched to at will. Each of these characters is vastly different from one another in personality and abilities, but yet they fit into a much wider and gripping storyline. This is especially shown off in a few of the many story missions, where the three characters can be used seamlessly and as a team to complete a task. Rockstar knows its strengths, which is why literally the first mission in the game fully utilizes this mechanic.

Thankfully, the fun and crazy action of the game's missions also transfers into the free-play in between (which you can easily spend hours playing). The large map of Los Santos and Blaine County are perfectly designed to allow the player to do almost anything. Want to fly around in a jet, steal one from the military base (but try not to get shot down); feel like starting a gang war, just rock up and start one. Almost anything that the player can come up with can be achieved so brilliantly in GTA V (which can also be enhanced by the use of cheats that can be inputted). Both the free play and missions of this game have been wonderfully designed, with incredible scenes of action continuously maintained throughout. The new first-person feature has also been included in this version, adding an entirely fresh perspective on the world of GTA.

The DLC is a bit controversial, the items being added are what everyone wants, but the price of these items in-game and also in real life are extremely expensive. For example, if you want to buy a hangar with all the upgrades and the most expensive plane in the game with all the upgrades also it will cost you over £100 in real money for two items, that’s crazy. This is also a great business model, but it’s getting ridiculous as it is turning into a pay to win the game, which becomes boring as you’ve got to play missions over and over again to earn money, but still not gets enough money to buy a single DLC item. Originally when the game came out the items were all reasonably priced so shark card was a good option that gets plenty for your money. They have expanded this game greatly adding new experiences and whole new meaning to crazy but if only it was affordable.

In addition to the story mode, Grand Theft Auto has a multiplayer alongside it. This can be switched to at any time, where many, many more options become available. GTA's multiplayer is free roam ramped up to 11, especially with the new larger lobbies that the Xbox One and PC versions of the game offer. After customizing your character, you can do missions to earn in-game currency, then continue to build your own little empire of illegal warehouses, upgraded vehicles and hangars full of planes. The opportunities are even greater than that of the story mode, but yet it is exactly where the only problem with GTA lies...

Having owned this game since it first launched, I have personally experience the incredible growth of the Online, as Rockstar adds many new (and free) DLC's. These, for the most part, have been incredible, each becoming more ambitious than the last and expanding the game massively. However, as more and more items are added, they begin to cost more and more of the in-game's currency. This has reached the point now where it quickly becomes a boring grind to even be able to afford the cheapest of the new additions. Of course, Rockstar offers "Shark cards" that can be purchased with real-world money and translate into game currency, but this is just adding to the issue, with Rockstar adding more and more expensive items so that they can gain more profits from the game.

Overall Grand Theft Auto V is a massive success, which has really set a standard for open-world games, but soon becomes a grind if you're interested in purchasing the newest items without having to use your real-world funds.

I agree on the cartoon and "nonsense style" that you mentioned in the review. I'm hoping that the next GTA is a bit more grounded and serious

I got GTA V on sale for I think it was $5. This was on Steam back in 2019 I think. I played it for a few months and then had to stop because of the hacking and issues. I am just waiting for the next game to come out at this point.
